The Application and Design Engineer will work as an engineer within the project engineering department, they will have responsibility for collecting design requirements through substation visits and discussions with colleagues and customers, and they will also be required to produce engineering documents and drawings, prepare costings and bill of material documents for projects. The Application and Design Engineer will also provide engineering support to sales, operational and delivery teams in the factory and on-site, as well as engineering and consultancy advice for the application of voltage control, tap changers and control, power systems protection equipment, support for existing products and input into new product development.


 Role Summary

  • Receive customer requests and identify the requirements
  • Cost estimation for design, applications and related opportunities
  • Design and produce voltage control and protection electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable diagrams and any other engineering drawing as deemed necessary by the Projects stream within Fundamentals Limited
  • Design control panels and produce general arrangement drawings and bills of material
  • Produce electrical designs for special projects
  • Produce insulation test schedules, control panel functional test schedules, FAT schedules
  • Produce required reports and certificates for the schedules described in the point above
  • Design high level applications, outlines and detailed designs for system integration, settings and parameter calculation and application
  • Check and approve technical documents and engineering drawings
  • Test and commission control and protection panels and schemes in the factory and on-site
  • Provide support to customers and colleagues for existing and legacy products and for their power system queries in general
  • Working within company health and safety policies and procedures


  • Have a strong background in general electrical engineering and electrical circuit theory with a strong command of mathematics with either a HND, HNC, degree in electrical/power systems engineering or equivalent qualification or experience
  • Able to read, understand and communicate through technical specifications and drawings and demonstrate a good standard of verbal and written English
  • Producing electrical design schematics for substations using AutoCAD electrical
  • Experience of producing schematics, wiring diagrams, core and cable schedules and control panel general arrangements in 2D and 3D
  • Producing bill of material files (BOMs/QOMs) and customer quotes through customer specification documents and requirements capturing
  • Customer support and customer interfacing
  • Knowledge of power systems and electrical substation arrangements
  • Knowledge of distributed generation and their effects on the power system
  • Be able to carry out independent research for consultancy related projects
  • Experience in using load flow analysis and fault level software (e.g. IPSA power).
  • Protection and voltage control settings calculation

Experience of any of the following would be useful but not essential:

  • Working within electrical substations
  • Designing and draughting voltage control schemes
  • Designing and draughting electrical protection schemes
  • Power systems and electrical substation arrangements and the equipment that can be found there including tapchangers and voltage control schemes
  • Electrical substation control panels design, especially voltage control panels
  • System automation; using PLCs or similar
  • Software programming; e.g. Python, VBA
