Type Testing and Design Engineer

The Type Testing and Design Engineer will be responsible for electronic hardware specification and testing needs within Fundamentals, including: as part of the product design process, pre-compliance and compliance, production, and post-delivery returns.


  • Selecting appropriate product and generic standards
  • Selecting, planning, executing and producing reports for product pre-compliance and compliance tests for safety, EMC and radio equipment standards
  • Arranging and overseeing external laboratories carrying compliance testing
  • Designing and overseeing manufacture of equipment and jigs for testing prototype hardware including any necessary software to operate the equipment
  • Designing and overseeing manufacture of equipment and jigs for production testing including any necessary software to operate the equipment
  • Delivery of hardware and software, designed to requirements and delivered to plan
  • Development of embedded software for embedded micro-controllers and DSPs
  • Development of mixed low-frequency analogue and digital circuits for AC voltage measurement, current loop and various serial busses, including schematic capture, PCB layout and prototype testing
  • Working within a cross-functional scrum team with “T-shaped” skill sets, i.e. while having a deep skill area being prepared to work as necessary in supporting skill areas to move the team forward in its work schedule


  • A degree in Product Design, Embedded Systems Design, Electrical or Electronic Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Able to identify and understand relevant standards to show compliance with national/international requirements and directives
  • Experience of planning and executing EMC, Enviro-mechanical and safety type tests (both in house pre-compliance as well as supporting accredited test houses)
  • Some experience of fault finding at component level on PCBs
  • Able to read, understand and communicate through conversation, technical specifications and drawings
  • Capable of working in a small team developing and maintaining existing products as well as working on their own projects and assisting with others
  • Basic theoretical knowledge and practical experience of analogue electronic design
  • Basic theoretical knowledge and practical experience of writing and running code on embedded microcontrollers such as Arduino, Beaglebone or Raspberry Pi
  • Ability to  estimate work and deliver on commitments; able to plan and manage their own time
  • Full UK driving license

The following would be useful but not essential:

  • Detailed understanding of the process of CE or UKCA marking and the test standard use to demonstrate compliance
  • Programs in C, C++, Python for the purpose of controlling hardware in real time
  • Either prototypes electronic designs using Veroboard or designs own PCBs using Commercial or free CAD software
  • Experience of working  circuits that measure voltages, currents, phase angles and harmonics
  • Experience of Scrum as a way of working and coordinating effort
  • Common control hardware and protocols such USB, CAN, RS485, SPI and SCADA protocols such as MODBUS, DNP3, IEC60870 and IEC61850
  • Experience of developing software to run on Windows or Linux desktop or embedded processors.
